Plug your stats into any calorie tool and it hands you two numbers that look almost interchangeable: BMR and TDEE. They are not the same thing. What BMR actually measures

BMR is your basal metabolic rate: the energy your body burns at complete rest just to stay alive. Breathing, circulating blood, keeping organs running, repairing cells, with zero movement on top. It is the single largest slice of what you burn in a day, usually most of it, which is why people fixate on it. On its own, though, it describes a body doing nothing.

The usual way to estimate BMR is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which uses your weight, height, age and sex. It is an estimate, not a measurement. Two people with identical stats can have genuinely different BMRs because of muscle mass, genetics and other things a formula cannot see. The number is useful. Just treat it as a starting point, not a fixed fact about your metabolism.

What TDEE adds on top

TDEE is total daily energy expenditure: everything you burn in a real day, not just at rest. It starts with your BMR and stacks the rest of life on top. The calories you spend walking, working, fidgeting, exercising, and even digesting food. Add all of that together and you get the number that reflects how much fuel your body actually uses.

In practice, TDEE is BMR multiplied by an activity factor. The extra pieces, mostly movement plus the smaller cost of digestion, get folded into that single multiplier instead of counted one by one. A worked example

Say the equation gives you a BMR of 1,600 calories. That is what you would burn spending the whole day in bed.

Now apply an activity factor. You work a desk job and get to the gym three times a week, which is light activity, so the multiplier is about 1.375:

1,600 x 1.375 = 2,200 calories.

That 2,200 is your TDEE, your estimated maintenance. Eat around it and your weight holds steady. Notice the gap between the two numbers: 1,600 at rest versus 2,200 in a real day. The 600 calories in between is everything you do while not lying down. That gap is exactly why the number you eat around matters.

Why TDEE is the number you eat around

Here is the part that trips people up. Weight change follows the difference between the energy you eat and the energy you burn across a full day. The energy you burn across a full day is TDEE, not BMR. So TDEE is your maintenance line, and your calorie target should be set against it.

Take the example above. If your BMR is 1,600 and you decide to eat at that number to lose weight, you are not creating a gentle deficit. Your body burns 2,200 in a real day, so eating 1,600 opens a 600-calorie hole every single day, because you also moved and lived on top of resting. That is far steeper than most people intend, and it tends to backfire with hunger, fatigue and stalls. The deficit should come off 2,200, the real number, not the 1,600 resting floor. A moderate cut of 300 to 500 off TDEE is the usual starting point.

The mistake almost everyone makes: too high a multiplier

The activity factor is what turns BMR into TDEE, and it runs on a standard scale:

  • Sedentary, desk job and little exercise: about 1.2
  • Lightly active: around 1.375
  • Moderately active: near 1.55
  • Very active: around 1.725
  • Extremely active, physical job plus hard daily training: up to about 1.9

The honest truth is that most people pick too high a multiplier, and this is where estimates quietly go wrong. Three gym sessions a week on top of a desk job is light to moderate activity, not very active, even though it feels like a lot of effort.

Watch what overstating it does to the math. Take the same 1,600 BMR. Pick light activity (1.375) and your TDEE is 2,200. Pick moderate (1.55) because the training “feels” harder, and it jumps to:

1,600 x 1.55 = 2,480 calories.

That is 280 calories a day of difference from one bumped multiplier. If your real maintenance is nearer 2,200 and you set your intake against 2,480, you have handed back most of the deficit you were trying to build, and the scale will not move the way you expect. When in doubt, choose the lower band. You can always nudge up later if results say you undershot.

Refine the estimate against reality

Both numbers are estimates, so the formula is only the opening guess. Your real TDEE is whatever keeps your weight stable in practice, and the only way to find it is to eat at your calculated number for a couple of weeks and watch what the scale does. If weight holds, the estimate was close. If it drifts, your true maintenance sits a little above or below the prediction.

That tells you your real maintenance is higher than 2,200, so you can eat a bit more than the formula claimed. Adjust to the evidence, not the equation.
