What EXIF data reveals about your photos (and how to strip it)

Every original photo carries an invisible EXIF record: device, exposure settings, timestamp, and often the GPS coordinates where you stood. Useful to a photographer, risky when you share it. Here is how to read it and clear it.

Here is the short answer: a normal photo file carries a small pile of hidden facts about itself, and one of them is often the exact spot on Earth where you took it. That record is called EXIF data. It rides along inside the original file every time you share it, and you cannot see it by looking at the picture. You have to open the file’s metadata to read it.

What is actually in there

EXIF (exchangeable image file format) is a block of metadata your camera or phone writes into a photo the moment it saves the file. It was built for photographers, and for that job it is genuinely handy. Here are the fields you will typically find:

  • Camera make and model. “Apple iPhone 15 Pro”, “Canon EOS R6”, and so on. Some cameras also write the body’s serial number, which is enough to tie a batch of photos to one specific device.
  • Lens and exposure settings. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length. This is the stuff that lets you sort a folder and see which settings produced your sharpest shot.
  • Date and time. Usually down to the second the shutter fired.
  • GPS latitude and longitude. The big one. If location was on, the file knows where you stood, often to within a few metres.
  • Owner or copyright string. Optional, and only there if the camera was set to embed it.

None of that is sinister on its own. The data describes the photo so software and people can make sense of it later. The catch is that all of it travels with the file when you hand the original to someone else, and one field is a lot more sensitive than your shutter speed.

The field that matters most: location

If your camera or phone had location services on, it almost certainly wrote GPS coordinates into the EXIF of each photo. Not a rough neighbourhood: a latitude and longitude, often accurate to within a few metres. The picture looks like any other. The file knows the exact spot where you pressed the button, and anyone who opens the metadata can read that point on a map.

This is the part worth stopping on. A photo of your living room, your kid in the garden, or an item you are selling, taken at home, can carry your home’s coordinates inside it. Share that original in public and you may be publishing your address to anyone curious enough to open the file’s details. The image gives nothing away to the eye. The EXIF gives it all away to a tool.

You do not have to take my word for any of this. Drop one of your own photos, one you took on your phone outdoors, into an EXIF viewer at files.hivly.net and read the fields. When I first did this with a photo from my own camera roll, the GPS field pinned the spot to a street corner I could recognise on a map, from a picture that looked like plain scenery. A screenshot is not the same as the original

Here is a distinction most posts skip, and it is a useful one. If you screenshot a photo and send the screenshot, the original’s EXIF does not come with it. A screenshot is a fresh capture of your screen, so it has no camera make, no exposure settings, and no GPS from the source photo. The camera fields simply are not in it.

That is not a licence to be careless. The screenshot is still a file, and it can record when you took the screenshot and on what device. So it is not metadata-free, and it is a lossy, awkward way to share a picture. But if all you want is to show someone an image without leaking where it was taken, a screenshot of it does not carry the location. Worth knowing.

You cannot rely on platforms to strip it

A common assumption is that posting a photo online scrubs this data for you. Sometimes it does. Many large social platforms re-encode every upload and drop the EXIF in the process, partly for privacy and partly because they re-compress everything anyway. But the behaviour is not consistent, and it is not something to trust your address to.

Messaging apps vary. Some strip EXIF from photos you send, some do not, and several keep the full block when you send a picture as a file or attachment rather than as an inline image. Email attachments usually keep everything. Original-quality upload options are designed to keep everything. So the safe assumption is the cautious one: any original file you send may still carry its location and the rest. The only way to be sure is to remove it before the file leaves your control, instead of hoping the receiving service happens to clean it.

How to strip it, and keep the photo

Removing EXIF does not harm the picture. A metadata tool rewrites the image without the EXIF block, so the pixels stay exactly the same and the hidden fields are gone. The photo looks identical. It just no longer answers questions about where, when, and with what. Done in the browser, the file never leaves your device, so cleaning it does not mean uploading the very thing you are trying to keep private.

A sensible habit: strip metadata from any photo you are about to post publicly or hand to a stranger, especially shots taken at home or anywhere you would rather not pin on a map.
