Frequently asked questions

Where do I put the sitemap.xml file?
In your site’s root, so it’s reachable at https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Then add a “Sitemap:” line to robots.txt and submit the URL in Google Search Console.
What do changefreq and priority actually do?
They’re hints, not commands. changefreq suggests how often a page changes and priority ranks pages against each other on your own site. Google largely ignores them now, so it’s fine to leave them off.
How many URLs can a sitemap hold?
A single sitemap can list up to 50,000 URLs and must stay under 50 MB uncompressed. Past that, split it into several files and list them in a sitemap index.
Do I need a lastmod date?
It’s optional but useful — an accurate last-modified date helps crawlers spot what’s changed. This tool fills today’s date when you enable lastmod and leave the field blank.
Is my URL list uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole sitemap is built in your browser, so you can create sitemap.xml without your list of URLs leaving your device.
