Bagged mulch is handy for small beds; bulk by the cubic yard is cheaper past about 10 bags. One cubic yard equals roughly thirteen 2 ft³ bags.
Mulch settles, so a fresh 3 in layer thins over the season. Top up rather than piling it against trunks and stems.
How it works
- 1
Measure the bed
Enter the length and width of the bed or area you are mulching.
- 2
Set the depth
Two to three inches refreshes a bed; three to four suppresses weeds.
- 3
Get the amount
See the cubic yards for bulk and the number of bags at your bag size.

Frequently asked questions
- How much mulch do I need?
- Multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, or by the bag volume for bags. The calculator does both so you can compare.
- How many bags of mulch in a cubic yard?
- A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it holds about thirteen 2 ft³ bags or nine 3 ft³ bags. Bulk is usually cheaper past roughly ten bags.
- How deep should mulch be?
- Two to three inches is enough for most beds; three to four blocks weeds. Keep it off trunks and stems and top up as it breaks down.
- How accurate is the mulch amount?
- The cubic yards are exact for the bed size and depth you enter. Bark, wood chip and compost pack down differently and mulch settles over a season, so order a little extra and top up as it breaks down.
