Bulk topsoil is sold by the cubic yard; bagged is easier for small jobs. Compare the two once you pass roughly ten bags.
Fresh topsoil settles as it drains and compacts, so order about 10% extra to keep the final level where you want it. Density varies with moisture and organic content.

Frequently asked questions
- How much topsoil do I need?
- Multiply length by width by depth in feet for the cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards, or by the bag volume for bags. The calculator does all three so you can compare a bulk load against bagged.
- How many bags of topsoil in a cubic yard?
- A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it holds about 36 of the common 0.75 ft³ (40 lb) bags. Bulk usually works out cheaper once you're past roughly ten bags.
- How deep should topsoil be?
- Two to three inches refreshes a tired lawn and four to six suits new grass. A raised bed wants six to twelve. Order about ten percent extra so the level holds as it settles.
- How accurate is the topsoil amount?
- The volume is exact for the area and depth; the tonnage varies with how wet and dense the soil is. Screened topsoil and heavier fill differ, so set your supplier’s density and add about ten percent, since fresh soil settles as it beds in.
