Dog Pregnancy Calculator

Estimate your dog's whelping (birth) due date from the mating date. Canine gestation is about 63 days, so you also get the earliest and latest days to expect the litter and a week-by-week timeline of what happens.

Estimate when your dog is due to give birth from the mating or ovulation date. Canine pregnancy runs about 63 days, so this dog pregnancy calculator shows the whelping due date, the likely 58 to 66 day birth window, and a week-by-week timeline of what to expect.

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter the mating date

Add the day your dog was mated (or the ovulation date if your vet timed it with progesterone testing).

  2. 2

See the due date and window

The estimate adds 63 days for the due date, with a 58 to 66 day window for the earliest and latest likely birth.

  3. 3

    Follow the timeline

Scroll the week-by-week milestones: ultrasound, X-ray puppy count, nesting and whelping, each dated for your dog.

Frequently asked questions

How long are dogs pregnant?
Canine gestation is about 63 days (roughly nine weeks) from ovulation or mating. In practice, healthy litters arrive anywhere from 58 to 68 days, because the mating date and the fertile date do not always line up.
Why is the birth window 58 to 66 days and not one exact date?
Sperm can survive for several days and the egg is fertile for a window too, so the true conception day can differ from the mating day by up to a week. Counting from mating gives a range rather than a single guaranteed date.
When can a vet confirm the pregnancy?
An ultrasound can usually confirm pregnancy and heartbeats from about day 25 to 28. To count how many puppies to expect, an X-ray from around day 45 is more reliable, once the puppy skeletons have calcified.
How will I know labor is close?
Many dogs stop eating and start nesting in the last day or two. A drop in rectal temperature below about 99°F (37.2°C) usually means whelping will begin within 24 hours. Contact your vet if she goes past day 66 to 68 without labor.
Is this a substitute for veterinary care?
No. This is an estimate for planning only. A pregnant dog should be seen by a veterinarian, who can confirm dates, litter size and any complications far more accurately than a calendar.
