Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between an invoice and a receipt?
- An invoice is a request for payment, sent before the money changes hands and showing what is owed and by when. A receipt is proof that payment has been made, given afterwards. The two often list the same items; the receipt simply confirms the amount has been received.
- What should a receipt show?
- A useful receipt shows who issued it, who paid, the date of payment, a description of what was paid for, the amount, and ideally the payment method. This generator covers each of those, and you can use the notes field for the method or a reference number.
- What does a filled-in receipt look like?
- A typical receipt reads something like: received from Jane Smith, on 3 February 2026, the sum of $150.00 for a two-hour cleaning visit, paid by bank transfer, reference INV-0007. This tool lays out those same parts, with the amount and date near the top and a notes line for the method or reference.
- Can I mark it as paid?
- A receipt is itself confirmation of payment, so the document is a record that the amount was received on the date shown. You can add the payment method or a transaction reference in the notes so the receipt stands on its own.
