This tool adds line numbers to any text or list. Paste your lines and each one is prefixed with its number, starting from one — or from any number you set. You choose the separator between the number and the text, whether that is "1. ", "1) ", a colon or a tab, and you can zero-pad the numbers so 1 through 100 line up as 001 to 100. There is also an option to skip blank lines so they are not counted. It is handy for turning a plain list into a numbered one, or preparing referenced lines.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the start value to anything you like and the count begins there, so you can carry on from a previous list or match an existing numbering. Enter 0 to start from zero, or 100 to continue a longer sequence.
What does zero-padding do?
Zero-padding adds leading zeros so every number has the same width: in a 100-line list you get 001, 002, and so on up to 100. That keeps the text neatly aligned in a monospace view and sorts correctly as text. Leave it off for plain 1, 2, 3 numbering.
Does it number blank lines?
By default yes, so the numbers match the true line positions. If you turn on "Skip blank lines", blank lines are left untouched and only lines with content get a number, which suits lists that use spacing between groups.
