Frequently asked questions

How long should I boil an egg?
From boiling water, about 6 minutes gives a soft, runny yolk, 9 minutes a jammy medium yolk, and 12 minutes a firm hard-boiled yolk. The presets here use those times, and times shift a little with egg size, altitude and how cold the eggs started.
Should I start the timer in cold or boiling water?
These presets assume you lower the eggs into already-boiling water and start the timer then. If you start eggs in cold water and bring it to the boil, begin timing once the water reaches a rolling boil.
Can I set my own time instead of a preset?
Yes. The presets are a quick start, but you can type any custom time if you prefer your eggs a particular way or you are timing something else in the kitchen.
