Frequently asked questions
- How are the sunrise and sunset times calculated?
- They come from the standard sunrise equation (the same NOAA solar maths used by observatories), worked out in your browser from the latitude, longitude and date. No location or request is sent anywhere; the astronomy runs entirely on your device. Times account for atmospheric refraction, so they match published almanac times to within about a minute.
- What timezone are the times shown in?
- By default they show in your own device’s timezone. If you set the IANA timezone field (for example Europe/London or America/New_York), the times display in that zone instead, which is what you want when the widget is for a place other than where you are.
- Where do I find a latitude and longitude?
- Right-click a spot in most map apps to copy its coordinates, or use the “Use my location” button to fill in where you are. Latitude runs from -90 to 90 (north positive), longitude from -180 to 180 (east positive).
- What does the widget show at the poles?
- In the far north or south there are days when the sun never rises or never sets. On those days the widget says “polar day” or “polar night” instead of a time, and reports the day length as 24 hours or 0.
- Is the embedded widget free to use on my site?
- Yes. Copy the iframe snippet and paste it anywhere. It runs client-side with no key and no tracking, and carries a small “Powered by hivly.net” link. There is nothing to sign up for.
