Frequently asked questions

How does the strength meter work?
It estimates how hard the password would be to guess from its length and the size of the character set you chose. Each extra character multiplies the possibilities, so a 16-character password mixing letters, numbers and symbols is far harder to crack than an 8-character one. Length matters more than any single trick.
What does exclude look-alike characters do?
It leaves out characters that are easy to confuse, such as the lowercase l, the number 1, the capital O and the number 0. This makes a password easier to read and type by hand without weakening it much, which helps when you have to copy it off a screen.
Is the password sent anywhere or saved?
No. The password is built on your own device and never leaves it. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, so once you copy or note it down, it exists only where you put it.
